MDAVO urges halt of temporary surveys of standing properties

IMPHAL, September 16: The Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organization (MDAVO) has in a press release expressed strong objection to the proposed survey program of standing properties like trees, fruit and non-fruit bearing trees by the SDO of Phungyar sub division, Ukhrul District in the surrounding villages of Chadong, Lamlai Khunou and Ramrei villages as a rehabilitation and resettlement program for Mapithel dam construction.

The press release further said that the proposed survey plan is just a continuation of the piecemeal approach for rehabilitation and resettlement. Such kind of a survey is planned only in September 2013 when the Mapithel Dam is planned for completion in March 2015 and this kind of survey should have been conducted much earlier before the construction of dam with due participation of all affected communities, it said.

The affected communities through MDAVO has been calling for conducting a holistic impact assessment under the Expert Review Committee formed in January, 2008 including detailed impact of forests, of standing properties and loss of livelihood etc with participation of affected communities, it said.

MDAVO requested the Government of Manipur to halt all temporary and interim surveys especially the proposed survey by the SDO, Phungyar, and urged the Government to conduct all forms of surveys for rehabilitation through the officially instituted Expert Review Committee (ERC), it said in the press release.
