Drunken brawl over lost mobile phone claims one

LAMKA, September 15: A man lost his life while two of his friends were severely injured after a fight broke out reportedly over the loss of a mobile phone.
The incident occurred last evening around 6:30pm at Thingtom village which is about 8 km from Lamka.
Women folk of Tuibuang area briefly blocked the NH 150 in protest against the killing, this morning around 9:30.
Meanwhile, sources said that all three are Kuki National Front (Z)/ KNF (Zogam) cadres while the other party who allegedly beat them up belong to the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC -D)/ HPC (D).
According to sources, one Mangchungnung (26), son of Thangkholal of Munpi village had stayed for a night at Thingtom Village and after returning home yesterday found that he had left his mobile phone at the village.
He along with two of his friends identified as Khailun (23) s/o Letkam of Kungla Veng , Tuibuang and Jangkholun (31) s/o Doukhothang of Kholmun Village went to get his mobile phone back.
Sources have also informed that he suspected a particular person from the village to have taken the phone.
It is believed that things turn ugly at the village, as they were beaten after being tied up by ropes.
After being informed of the assault, the Bethel Veng youths and family members later picked up the injured three, informed the source.
The three were brought to the CCpur District Hospital around midnight where Jangkholun succumbed to his injuries around 3:30am.
The father of the deceased, Doukhothang informed that his son and his friends knew the other guys who beat them up. He said the three had even shared drinks and food with the other group, before the issue of the lost mobile phone (Nokia 311) came up which only angered the others and due to the ensuing altercation, his son lost his life, he said. The two injured were admitted at CCpur district hospital and later shifted to Sialmat Christian Hospital from where Mangchungnung was again referred to Shija Hospital, Imphal as his condition worsened.
The deceased Jangkholun is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Later in the day, the two families involved had a meeting at KKL complex. The meeting continued till the filing of this report with the corpse of the deceased remaining at CCpur District Hospital morgue.
