Suspected UGs shoot dead 34 year old van driver

IMPHAL, August 18: A 34 year old man was shot dead by unknown persons suspected to be underground militants today at around 2 pm at an inter village road in between Mayai Lambi to National Highway Number 2 near Chandranadi canal under Wangoi police station in Imphal West district.

A voter identity card found from the pocket of the deceased identified him as Okram Gyanendro (34), son of O Achou of Singjamei Oinam Thingel.

Locals who had witnessed the incident said that at around 2 pm, they saw the two vehicles coming toward Mayai Lambi on Chandranadi inter village road.

A white colour Maruti Van bearing registration Number AS-01-P-9602 was seen, followed by another car. After overtaking the Maruti Van, the occupants in the car signalled the Van driver to stop, eyewitnesses said.

Both the vehicles stopped with a distance of some 10 meters and two unknown persons came down from the car and moved towards the Maruti Van, they said.

After a gap of minute or two, some four five rounds of gun shots were heard and the two unknown youths were also seen running back to their car in a hurry after which, they fled from the scene moving towards Hiyangthang side, they said.

Wangoi Police Station officer in charge Munan, along with a large number of police personnel soon arrived at the scene, they said.

Police said the dead body was found with two bullet holes on the forehead. Another two bullet holes were also found on the rear right side door of the Van, police said.

The deceased was wearing a black T-shirt, dark brown half pants and a red colour slipper with white strips on it, police said.

A team of forensic experts examined the dead body and also conducted an inquest. Police later deposited the dead body at RIMS morgue for post mortem examination.

Meanwhile, soon after hearing the news of the dead, women folks, local club volunteers in Singjamei area came out in large numbers and blocked National Highway 2 (Imphal-Moreh Road) this evening around 5.30 pm.

The angry mob started burning tyres on the road and shut down the shops in Singjamei.

Speaking to the media, one of the family members of the deceased said he was a van driver by profession who provides his service along Imphal to Moreh Road.

He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

The relative further said that they have not received any demand or threat from any underground elements and the deceased was only a daily bread earner of the family.

She appealed to clarify who is behind the killing and why was he been killed at the earliest.

She also appealed the concerned officials of the state government to arrest the persons involved in the killing of Gyanendro at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Police while during the checking of the van found two toy cars containing two circuit boards each wrapped with carbon paper which are used in making remote control IED bombs.

The said circuit boards were displayed before the media at Wangoi Police Station this evening around 9:30 pm.

The cell phone of the deceased was missing but an amount of  Rs 1500 was found inside his wallet.
