CORE to observe world's Indigenous day

IMPHAL, August 8: The Centre for Organization Research and Education (CORE) has today said in a press release that CORE, along with other indigenous peoples' organisations of Manipur will observe the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples under the theme "Indigenous Peoples building alliances: Honouring treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements".
The press release further continued that CORE expresses their concerns regarding the role of state in honouring the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UN DRIP) 2007 in letter and in spirit while adding that there are corresponding domestic laws in regards to treaties, agreements and related conventions to protect and promote human rights, it said.
It is further continued to add that the indigenous people lands, territories, forest, languages, cultures, knowledge, customs, religions, etc should be protected and preserved by the state. The state must ensure that indigenous peoples are allowed and encouraged to own, develop and practice their traditional inheritances of both material and non-material without interference in recognition of the spiritual, cultural and historic relationship between indigenous peoples and their land and natural resources it said.
