CM inaugurates “Hijagang” at Kangla

IMPHAL, August 21: State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who is also the president of the Kangla Fort Board, inaugurated the newly constructed Hijagang inside the Kangla where four boats including the Hiyang Hiren-two traditional boats believed to be of the Gods will be kept today.

The inaugural function was organized by the Manipur State Archaeology Department today.

Following the official inauguration of the Hijagang, a traditional ritualistic ceremony was also conducted in the attendance of the CM and other religious priests.

Speaking at the function, Leisangthem Thoiba of Yaiskul Hiruhanba Leikai the chief architect responsible for the carving of the Hiyang Hiren said the Hiyang Hiren are made from “Uningthou” tree and the two other smaller boats are made from “Tairen” tree.

The carving of all four boats were done at Khamsom village in Senapati district and was transported along the Iril River, he said.

He said it took nearly nine months to reach Kangla from the Senapati village while Rs 15 lakhs have been spent for the carving of the boats.

Speaking at the function, Arts and Culture Commissioner RK Nimai said that in a bid to provide the real feel of the state’s history and rich heritage to the people, the state government has taken up the effort to restore and exhibit the boats.

The boats which are on display to the general public, will however be out of bounds for general public to touch or climb on it.
