“Puyas’ Anglo Manipuri translation on the cards to draw wider readers”

IMPHAL, July 26: With an eye to preserve the Meitei Manuscripts (Puyas), the government will try to translate the manuscripts into Anglo Manipuri and English, said Dr K Sobita Director, Arts and Culture.
She said it will further help people of other states to read and understand about Manipur and its history.
She was speaking during the first day of the two day seminar on textual review of the puyas and the release function of three books Seminargi Khomjinba Warol vol VIII, Luwanglon Khonglon and History of Moirang written by Saikhom Menjor organized by the Manipur State Archives, government of Manipur at Imphal Hotel, conference hall today.
Speaking at the function, Dr Leishangthem Chandramani Singh, former Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur said the advent of Hindu religion in the state had brought about the descent of the archaic Manuscripts of the Meiteis.
Due to the failure to properly preserve the ancient manuscripts, the Manipuri society is today unable to trace out its history before Nongda Lairen Pakhangba whose reign is dated to 33 AD, he said.
He expressed that the state needs to collect all the manuscripts and translate them into Anglo Manipuri and English so that to make easier for the readers.
He appealed to the public to hand over ancient manuscripts to Manipur State Archives Department for the preservation of the old manuscripts and for their translation.
