Police fire tears gas shells to control angry mob

IMPHAL, July 7: Imphal East police resorted to firing tear gas shells and live rounds in the air to quell a mob which had gathered in front of the Public Hospital, Hapta Golapati this evening around 7:30pm.
The mob had gathered since around 4pm this afternoon following the elopement of a woman doctor of the hospital with a board member of the same hospital today. The incident followed the non complaince of the man's family to send back the woman as per customs, following which the girl's family stormed the hospital demanding the whereabouts of the woman doctor and alleging that it was the hospital’s bound duty as she had left her home for her duty.
In order to control the angery mob which was trying to force their way into the hospital, the police had to resort to firing tear gas shells. However, there has been no report of human casualties.
Meanwhile, Angam Kamei SP Imphal East also rushed to spot and took stock of the situation and helped bring the angry mob under control.
