WAD demands punishment for crime against women

IMPHAL, May 4: Stating that crimes against women is continuing in the state, Women Action for Development (WAD) has demanded to award befitting punishment to the culprits. The NGO pointed out to the murder of a minor girl on March 5, the murder of N Stayabhama, Kakawa on April 5 and Mina of Kakching on May 1.
Speaking to reporters at the Manipur Press Club today, K Devla a volunteer of WAD said there has been no instance of any befitting punishment being given to culprits found guilty of crimes against women. "Leave alone punishment, most police cases are left unattended without any proper investigation or due process being taken up," she pointed out while maintaining that all 60 MLAs should resign since they are not accountable to the people of the state.
Briefing the media on a field visit conducted by a team of WAD today regarding the death of Mamtaz (18) D/o Angou Khan of Yairipok Houden Keirangbi at Trio Standard English School, Urup at 4 pm yesterday who is alleged to have killed herself by consuming poison, she said that a Zilla Parishad member had disclosed that the deceased had eloped a year back with Boy (25) @ Abdul Rajak S/o Kitabullah of Keirao Urup Salanthong Mayai Leikai who is a 5th IRB personnel. The founder of the mentioned school is the father of Boy, Devla continued.
She then said, according to a witness named Md Sahid Ahmed, Mamtaz was attended to at the veranda of the school and died on the way to JNIMS.
