Mother appeals for investigation in daughter’s death

IMPHAL, May 26: Sagolshem (O) Rajmukhi has appealed to investigate the death of her daughter Sagolshem (N) Ningthoujam (O) Lata Devi, 26, daughter of (L) S Loken of Samram Makha Leikai, Thoubal district who had killed herself by consuming poison (Hill Dal) in Saturday evening.
In a press meet at Manipur Press Club today, Rajmukhi alleged that her daughter committed suicide as she could no longer bear the torture of her husband.
Her husband has an extramarital affair and often beats her up after being drunk telling her to leave the house, she alleged.
Lata had eloped with N Surjit son of (L) N Nabadip of the same locality, who is a VDF personnel posted at tentha and had been married for about 10 years, she continued.
They have a daughter who is studying in 3rd standard, she added and alleged that her daughter’s husband’s whole family whom she identified Angousana, mother-in-law; Binodkumar, brother-in-law and his wife Tongoubi; and Menaka, sister had also tortured her.
She lamented that her daughter came to her parental home many times saying that she do not want to go back to her marital home as she could not bear the tortures of her husband.
At the time of going back she had said, “The only reason I’m going back there is for the love of my daughter”.
Yesterday after 4 pm, Lata ran away from her marital home after locking the door from outside and consumed the poison at a paddy field which is about 200 metres away. She was brought to a private clinic at Wangjing then at Thoubal from which she was referred to RIMS, she continued to lament.
“She died at Waithou on the way to RIMS. When we reached RIMS the doctor said she is no more. The body was brought back to her marital home and her family there said that the body should be cremated at night. Then Thoubal police came and pick up the body for post mortem”, the mother continued.
A verbal submission has been done at Thoubal Police Station yesterday which the police had noted down, Rajmukhi said and appealed the concerned authority to punish the accused under the law if the cause of death is proven to be out of continuous torture or a conspiracy.
“A proper case should be held at the court. The dead body which is kept at RIMS morgue will not be taken until a solution is met”, she added. She appealed the organisations in the state to support in finding the cause of suicide of her daughter.
The post mortem was not yet done till the filing of this report.
