Race for Village Chief results in violence

IMPHAL, April 2: The struggle for the seat of the village chief at a village lying along the Myanmar border in Ukhrul district was marred by violence this evening around 5pm.

The incident happened at Khamashom village under Ukhrul Police which is about one and a half hour's distance from the police station.

Soon after receiving information about the gunfight, a large team of the Ukhrul police led by the OC and accompanied by a medical team was dispatched for the village, said the Ukhrul SDPO.

He continued that even though unofficial sources have claimed that two persons were killed and others injured during the violence, there is still no official confirmation as there is still no contact with the team.

According to sources, the incident occurred after Khamashom village former chief AS Vaomi and his supporters came out with guns and attacked the present village chief AS Yangmasho’s supporters.

It is also learnt that the present village chief AS Yangmasho’s supporters had earlier won a court case regarding the selling of a large lot of timber from the village and the provision of job cards for MGNREGS which happened after AS Vaomi was discharged from being the village chief.
