New Delhi, February 9, 2013: With over 50,000 infants born with clubfoot every year in India, Vice President Hamid Ansari on Saturday stressed on timely medical intervention to identify and cure it to help prevent permanent disability among children.
Inaugurating the "National Clubfoot Conference" organised to raise awareness on the prevalence of Clubfoot deformity on Saturday, he said it was an important factor of disability among children, especially in rural areas.
"While clubfoot is easily identifiable and curable based on timely intervention, as a large number of children suffering from the disease are from the rural areas, they remain permanently disabled for want of access to timely cure and treatment," Ansari said.
The Vice President noted with concern that more than 10 million persons in India are with locomotor disabilities.
The Vice President said that until recently many children with clubfoot were treated surgically, which is not only an expensive but a less than fully satisfactory option due to relatively poor long-term results.
He said a new method The Ponseti Method - can correct the foot deformity in children in a more cost effective and efficient manner.
He also expressed happiness over the programme where state governments partnered with CURE International to help treat children with clubfoot and NRHM had also entered this partnership, which has seen 7000 children enrol for free treatment in 18 states in India.
