Afzal hanging: Security tightened across the country


New Delhi, February 9, 2013:A tight security vigil was put in place across the country including national capital New Delhi on Saturday to ensure that no untoward incident takes place in the wake of hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.  

Curfew was imposed in the entire Kashmir Valley as authorities apprehended law and order problem, even as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah arrived in Sri Nagar to personally monitor the situation.

As a pre-emptive measure, all 10 districts of Kashmir was brought under curfew before day break, a senior police official said.

Large number of police and CRPF personnel have been deployed across the Valley to maintain law and order, the official said.


In the national capital where Afzal was hanged, a tight security vigil was put in place to ensure no untoward incident takes place.

All police stations in the city were put on high alert, police sources said.

Additional deployment of forces has been made in minority dominated areas across the city, they said.

Taking cognisance the security was beefed up in West Bengal also.

The West Bengal police has sent a security alert to all police stations across the state, a senior police official said.

"In the wake of the hanging of Afzal Guru, we have sent security alert to all the police stations and security has been beefed up in all the bordering police station areas", Additional Director General (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purokayastha said.

The President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected Afzal Guru’s mercy plea five days ago.

A resident of Sopore in north Kashmir, 43-year-old Guru was sentenced to death in 2002 by a special court and the verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2005. His body was buried in the prison premises.

Mumbai on alert after Afzal Guru's hanging

An alert has been sounded and extensive security measures were taken across the metropolis by city police in the wake of hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in the national capital, police said today.

All the police stations in the city were asked to remain alert even as the patrolling has been intensified.

"Deputy Police Commissioners have been instructed to remain present in their areas," they said.

Police presence was increased in the sensitive and minority-dominated areas, they said, adding that special forces like Quick Response Teams, Riot Control Units and Bomb Detection and Disposal squads were put on alert.

Security checks at the railway stations were also increased, police said.

Afzal Guru, Jaish-e-Mohammad militant convicted in the audacious attack on Parliament in 2001, was hanged this morning in Tihar Jail in an operation shrouded in secrecy, five days after his mercy plea was rejected by the President.
