Manipur Journalists' team sweeps all the medals in table tennis

Guwahati, Nov 23: Manipur  Journalists’ team swept all of the medals in Table Tennis and Badminton events in the 4th North East Media Sports Meet 2012 being held at Kanaklata Indoor Stadium, Guwahati.

In Table Tennis Men’s Singles final, Ibobi of Sangai Express beat PJ Baruah of Assam Tribune 11-05, 11-06 and won gold. In Women’s Singles final, S Sonia of Poknapham won gold after defeating Smiti Rekha of North East TV 11-9,11-5.

In men’s team event final, Manipur  team defeated Assam Tribune by 2-0 and won gold. The AMWJU team comprises of Ibobi of Sangai Express, Michael of Sangai Express and Wangkhem Rishikesh of Hueiyen Lanpao.

Earlier, in men’s singles, Ibobi beat Sushil Choudhury of DDK Guwahati in the first round, Ranjit of Prime News in the Quarter Final and N Tide of DDK Guwahati in the semi final rounds. Meanwhile Sonia entered final after defeating Navanitha Kalita of Prime News in the semi final match.

In men’s singles, Michael got defeated to PJ Baruah of Assam Tribune in the semi final round while Rishikesh lost to PJ Baruah.

Manipur journalists' Table Tennis team has been reigning the NE Media Sports Meet since 2010 and has earned hat trick by winning gold in Team event for three consecutive times.

Meanwhile in Badminton, the state journalists' team won gold in both men’s singles and team event.

In the final match of men’s singles, N Bikramjit of Mannaba defeated Sibashish of Assam Tribune and won gold. On the other hand AMWJU team also won gold in the team event after defeating Assam Tribune 2-1. In first singles, Ibobi beat Prasanna 21-16 while N Philip of ISTV lost to Sibashish of Assam Tribune 11-21 in the second singles. In the deciding doubles match, the team comprising Bikramjit and Philip beat Sibashish and Prasanna of Assam Tribune 21-13 and won the gold medal.
